Since the beginning of 2019 I have been challenging myself to incorporate new collaging techniques into my artwork. In the past my collages have been one dimensional. Recently, I have been exploring how to create dimension using torn paper strips and other recycled materials. I found that I could create texture and movement by lifting torn paper strips off the support. As I work the papers organically fall
into place. The spaces between the strips create depth and gives the viewer a peak at what lays underneath. I have noticed that a change may occur over time as the papers naturally shift and curl. The strips also allow me to play with color in exciting new ways. Layering bold, contrasting colors can give a collage energy. Using colors that are similar can make a collage feel calm and soothing. I enjoy the process of finding the right combinations of colors and images.
